Anderson Chapel

Rumors of a diabolical force exploding through a wall at former Anderson Chapel in Unicoi, Tennessee circulated until the church was demolished in 2000. How exactly the giant gaping hole came to be in the wall is, however, much more mundane of a story.
Local legends espouse two different versions of how the hole was made. The first was that during services it became obvious that a small boy was possessed by a demon and that the congregation laid hands on him to exorcise the unclean spirit. When they did, an invisible force detonated from the boy and ripped the hole in the wall. A second version maintains that the preacher of the church was hosting solitary black masses on dark nights. He was successful in raising the Devil himself and as the black shadow coiled from the ground to coalesce into a solid form, the preacher screamed and the Devil darted through the wall, leaving the hole.
Neighborhood residents interviewed by the Haunt Masters Club: Tri-Cities Parapsychological Research & Investigation had a different story as to how the hole got there. They said that building had been abandoned long before the accident, citing lack of congregation. The caretaker of the graveyard used a bush hog to mow and one day accidentally shifted into reverse, slamming into the wall and leaving the huge hole.
This seems to be yet another example of how stigmatized property in the 1980s took on a sinister, diabolical tone and indeed there were many quasi-Satanic images spray painted inside of the church.
