There is one place in Hawkins County where one of Cupid’s arrows has landed. It’s called Ebb and Flowing Spring. When it was called Sinking Spring, a chance meeting here usually resulted in true love. Is it haunted today by a mysterious Lady in White who never found her soul mate?
Ebb and Flowing is a tidal spring. There are only two known springs in the United States that displays these characteristics. Every two hours and 27 minutes, the trickle turns into a stream that produces 500 gallons of cool water per minute. The waters supposedly have mystical amorous properties. Like a love potion, it is said that anyone who drinks the water will soon find his or her intended. Local legend tells that the founder of Rogersville, Joseph Rogers, drank from the stream and the next day met his true love, Mary Amis.
Give this magical atmosphere, is it any wonder some people think it is haunted? Though she has been seen less frequently since the road was paved, the mystifying ghost is said to wander the immediate area around the spring. Or is this a folktale from Scot-Irish settlers who brought their old world superstitions to the Southern Appalachian Mountains? In mythology, ladies in white are often associated with pools and streams.
