Hanging Cut

There is a place in Rogersville’s Guntown Community where the spirits of executed men and women are still said to appear.
In his book Stories from Home: A Patchwork of Memories, Rodney Ferrell writes that the cut is along Colonial Road in Rogersville. A canopy of trees offered a perfect spot for lynching slaves and people of low social standing. Even thought the tracks have been taken up and the cut is now overgrown, something still lingers. Local legend in the African American community says the cut is haunted by the souls of the men and women who were hanged here long ago.
