North Sulpher Springs Road

In his book Stories from Home: A Patchwork of Memories, Rodney Ferrell writes that local legend tells that one evening a young Confederate soldier was returning home to Sulpher Springs Valley when Union soldiers ambushed him.  He was robbed and decapitated with his own sword. His head was dropped down a now concealed well in front of Spires Chapel Baptist Church. Since this grisly murder, a headless Confederate apparition has been spotted riding a sullen horse from the woods alongside North Sulpher Springs Road to nearby Shepherd’s Cemetery.
