Shoppes at Marketplace

Co-authors Mike Williams and Joel Spears write in their book Haunts, Haints and Other Mysterious Tales of Hawkins County that the Shoppes at Marketplace in downtown Rogersville is haunted by the spirit of a man who built Brownlow Hotel.
301 East Main Street in Rogersville is built where the Brownlow Hotel once stood. It was a tavern, casino and house of ill fame. Tinsmith Thomas Galloway “Tom” Brownlow built the inn around 1860. It closed after his death, but it seems to shop employees of The Looking Glass and CompuServe that his spirit has returned to haunt their businesses. Hairdressers come in and find all the curling irons on when they are sure they had been unplugged the night before. Employees at CompuServe have noted that Tom also likes to hide things and disturb the display light in the front window. He has been known to open and close doors and occasionally appears wearing a gray suite.
