Maxwell Academy was built in 1852 by the Presbyterian Church and was named after Captain George Maxwell. Maxwell was one of the captains under Isaac Shelby and fought at the Battle of King’s Mountain on the North Carolina and South Carolina that pushed Royal loyalists back into South Carolina. He came to Sullivan County in 1771 and in 1781 was one of the representatives from the county in Legislature of North Carolina; he is buried in the New Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The Academy operated as a private school by the New Providence Presbyterian Church across the street until 1907. After that time it operated as a public school for Hawkins County, teaching grades 1 – 12.

Local legend says that you can sometimes still hear the children chattering in the upstairs room. 1
