Nowhere Ridge

In Hometown Memories: Squirrel Gravy and Feed Sack Underwear: Tales from the Good Old Days in the Eastern Tennessee Mountains, Bob Lasley and Sallie Holt, published in 2008, R. V. Smith tells of two ghosts seen at different times. In an article entitled “The Headless Ghost of Nowhere Road,” the author tells that a section of Poga Road in Carter County climbs Nowhere Ridge. Before it was paved in 1950, the image of a nude, headless woman would occasionally appear to passersby as they approached a section of overhanging rocks. No explanation was ever given for the frightening ghost, but the one that preceded it is connected to a nondescript, illegal bar that once stood alongside the road. The image of a woman wearing a red dress is still said to occasionally step into the road carrying a pair of red, high heel shoes. When the unsuspecting motorist breaks, she simply vanishes. Could this be the spirit of an unnamed lady of the evening that frequented the bar only to die when she stepped in front of a moving vehicle many years ago?
