This mountain in Butler and Mountain City is said to be the home of something called Foxfire, something local legends describe as either a rolling or floating ball of light and/or fire. In this instance, the sphere is rumored to roll across even dry brush, not catching anything on fire, and looking for a victim. 1
Native North American Cherokee Indians called this creature Atsil-dihye Gi: Little people who are called “fire carriers,” who appear as will-o-the-wisp, or glowing balls of light over moist ground or bogs (swamp gas); considered very unfriendly.
