State Route 692 runs through Dowell Gap, named after Dowell Branch, which is said to be haunted by a “man’s leg from knew to the foot” (Cooper, p. 60). According to an interview with Estella Salyer for Ann Goode Cooper’s 2003 book Gathering up Memories: a Collection of Appalachian Stories, her grandfather, Jim Head, had an experience where the etherealized body part was “kicking rocks off a hillside” (Cooper, p. 60).
