DeFriece Park

Since there are so few visitors to DeFriece Park at the intersection of Fifth and Stine Streets in winter, only a few have heard the screaming lake. V. N. “Bud” Phillips recounts the original tragic story of the ghost that still haunts the lake in Pioneers in Paradise: Legends and Stories from Bristol Tennessee/Virginia. In 1876, 16-year-old Viola Kennett was ice-skating on the lake when the ice gave way and she drowned in the frigid depths. Since then, her screams can sometimes be heard on cold, winter nights.
