High Ridge

The hill at the end of Windsor Avenue is called High Ridge. From this high point, according to V. N. “Bud” Phillips’ book Pioneers in Paradise: Legends and Stories from Bristol Tennessee/Virginia, phantom crying can sometimes be heard. The story that the eerie noise is the ghostly voices of children has circulated since a quiet family moved onto the hill. After two of their younger children died, the eldest would sit by their unmarked graves and cry, until she, too, died. The parents left their house and left all of the furniture behind, never to be heard from again. But it seems the eldest girl can still be heard.
