As Kingsport Times-News writer Rick Wagner observed in his 07/15/2007 article “Tours show off the new, the old and the renewed in downtown Kingsport”, the old State Theatre is said to be haunted.

“If that's really a ghost, [Jeff] Lane said, it could be the ghost of architect Earl Stillwell, who was upset with the theater owners

for straying from the original building front design, or a projector operator who spent long hours in the projection booth.” (
