For Haunted South TV, Leigh Kassem discussed with members of Beyond Paranormal the strange occurrences at the former Kingsport Grocery Company.
She said the she and employees had seen shadows and heard discarnate voices and phantom footsteps. She said that one night she was stocking the bar and saw a shadowy image leave the pool hall and go up the stairs. On the second floor, she revealed, employees often heard footsteps and what sounded like a chair being dragged across the floor, usually around 1:00 AM.
Howard Bastedo revealed he was witness to a spectacular and unforgettable feat of physical phenomena. He tried setting up chairs in the banquet room on the third floor three times. Each time, he would leave the room and when he returned and the chairs would accumulate in the center of the room.
Employees blamed the phenomena on a man named “JD” who died in the elevator shaft in 1922. His obituary read that on 12/14/1922, Jonathan Draper “JD” McCagey was carrying boxes into the elevator on the first floor. Unknown to him, the elevator was actually on the second floor. Around 8:30 AM, he walked into the empty elevator shaft and fell to his death. Coroner reports later revealed that he had broken his neck and his skull had been crushed.
Since his death was so sudden, perhaps JD is still working at the former grocery company, only now as a ghost.
