Cameo Theatre at 703 State Street in Bristol, Virginia is not haunted, but according to Ghosts of Bristol: Haunting Tales from the Twin Cities, by V. N. “Bud” Phillips, the spirit of a true character from Bristol’s past occasionally appears walking the sidewalk in front of the building, even in broad daylight.
This ghost is said to be that of Pocahontas Hale, the most prolific madam in Bristol’s history. As Phillips explains in his book popular book Pioneers in Paradise: Legends and Stories from Bristol Tennessee/Virginia, Cameo Theatre stands on the lot where Pocahontas’ infamous house of ill repute, the Black Shaw, stood. He described her as around six-foot-tall and always wearing black, exactly how people describe this ghost.
