Just off Cherokee Road, Dry Creek Road, also called Loan Oak Road, runs through 6 miles of the Cherokee National Forest, and it is rumored to be haunted. At night, walkers report hearing footsteps behind them. But, whenever they look back, no one is there. If they quicken their pace or even run, the phantom footsteps seem to keep in stride. 1
It is possible that the road is haunted by escaped slaves during pre-Civil War times, as a house close to the road was part of the Underground Railroad.
