McQuilkin House

When Richard and Jane Sheehan bought their lovely, two-story house on West Walnut Street in Johnson City, they counted themselves lucky. Sure, it needed a little work, but it was worth the investment.  But, there was something different about this house.

One winter evening, the couple was leaving the house after some extensive cleaning, when Jane turned around and saw a light on in the upstairs. She thought that was a little odd, considering there were no light bulbs up there. Then, the figure of a woman simply materialized and quickly faded away and the light was gone. Blinking a few times, she decided it must be her mind playing tricks on her.

Richard soon saw the same apparition standing on the stairs looking at him when he was doing repair work; the ghostly woman was also seen sitting in the living room chair. Unsettled, the couple decided to do their research and came to the conclusion that it was the restless spirit of Julia “Quilkie” McQuilkin, who for the last 25 years of her life stayed in her upstairs bedroom shooting a pellet gun at children who dared mess around din her garden.

Perhaps she didn’t like Richard in her garden, either, because one day he was trimming a redbud tree when he felt something rush through him and he fell to the ground, breaking his collar bone, both arms and six ribs. After that, they have not seen Julia or experienced any supernatural phenomenon. 1
