William Gannaway Brownlow was a Union supporter during the Civil War, was a passionate Methodist minister, owned and edited the Jonesborough Whig (the newspaper at the time), and was one of the most hated men in the area because of his strong opinions. “Parson” Brownlow is often reported to the spirit that walks the Jonesborough Cemetery at night. The strange thing is, he’s not even buried in Jonesborough; his grave lives in Knoxville. Perhaps he is searching for one of his wives who is buried in the cemetery? 1
