Knocking Ghost of New Canton

A poltergeist reminiscent of the presence in the Fox Cabin was the talk of the New Canton Community in the 1930s. The Phillips family lived near Elm Springs Road in Church Hill. A presence began knocking on walls and quickly progressed to other tricks. Mysterious high heel footsteps would pace the floors and doors would open and close on their own. On more than one occasion, everyone rushed at the sound of breaking dishes. When they got to the kitchen, everything was as they had left it; nothing was broken. Imitative sounds and are common in poltergeist cases. Della Mae Phillips instinctively asked the “ghost” questions. It would tap once for yes and twice for no. The invisible presence wasn’t limited to questions about its purposed identity or past events in the area. It could also answer questions to which no one knew the answer, even about the future. Twins Mammie Lou and Lide remember one curious night spent in the home. They slept in bed with their cousin Della Mae. In no time, they heard a tapping on the wall above their head. Della Mae was accustom to their nightly visitor and invited the girls to ask questions. They were not disappointed.
